KeymasterHi Sherribear!
Great questions! August is part of the rain season, so it’s possible you’ll encounter rain during your trip regardless of where you go. The southern Caribbean part of the country (i.e., Cahuita to Manzanillo) does receive better weather around August and September, so that’s an option, but it’s not to suggest that you should spend all of your time there. Both La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio provide a ton of great things to see and do, and I’d hate for you to miss out on those experiences simply because you intend to visit during August and only want to go where the weather, historically, is most favorable. (If the weather is an absolute deal-breaker for you, I’d recommend visiting during January, February, or March.) For more information about what you can expect during a visit in August, don’t miss our related blog post:

Renting A Car In Costa Rica: Should You Do It?
Specifically, the roads into and out of the Liberia, La Fortuna, and Manuel Antonio areas are all paved and generally easy to drive. So, even if you encounter rain during your trip, this shouldn’t hinder your ability to drive around; you may just need to drive a little slower, because rain, in general, is a hazard.
