Great question! We’re familiar with both hotels, so I can certainly answer your question.
If you’re after luxury, Arenal Kioro is the better option. But you’re right, it’s also the much more expensive option, and so the question becomes whether it’s worth the extra cost. In my opinion, what you get for the extra money at Arenal Kioro is a room that has a Jacuzzi and a balcony and bed with an unobstructed volcano view. I also found the service to be higher at Arenal Kioro. If you feel these features are worth the extra money, then I’d recommend going with Arenal Kioro. If not, I’d recommend going with Volcano Lodge.
Both properties have views of the volcano (Arenal Kioro’s is closer) and comfortable rooms. Kioro’s rooms are a bit fancier, but for the cost, Volcano Lodge’s rooms are fine. Both properties have a restaurant on-site, and although Kioro’s aims to be higher class, I actually loved dining at the Volcano Lodge–I’ve been to their restaurant a few times, and their breakfast buffet was better than I was expecting. With respect to hot springs, both properties provide these, but Kioro’s springs are the off-site Titoku hot springs, about a 5-minute drive from the hotel. Volcano Lodge’s hot springs are on-site, which is wildly convenient, especially with respect to visits after dark.
