Hello Billmahony!
There are hiking trails all around Costa Rica, many of which can be accessed without a tour guide. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but in general, most national parks and biological reserves in Costa Rica welcome visitors for self-guided visits. It’s more common for nature reserves and other protected land areas that fall on private properties to require visitors to hike trails with a guide, not only because the private properties want to ensure you’re kept safe during your visit, but also so they can provide work opportunities to their tour guide employees.
Closest to you in the Jaco area of the country is the Carara National Park, which you’re welcome to hike on your own without a tour guide. 🙂
Pura vida!
