    Hey NornIron!

It’s great to hear that you’ll have three full weeks to explore! That’s wonderful. 🙂

With respect to your time on the Caribbean coast, my answer would be different if you planned to rent a car, but since you mentioned that you’d prefer not to have one, I’d suggest sticking to Puerto Viejo center. If you stay on the outskirts of Puerto Viejo (meaning somewhere between Cocles and Manzanillo), you’ll likely find that you want to make several trips into town to eat, shop, walk around, etc., and you’ll end up paying for a taxi or a tuk-tuk to leave Puerto Viejo center and drive out to wherever you plan to stay, only to bring you into town, and then pay them again later in the day to take you from town back out to your accommodation. One way to avoid the transportation charges would be to rent bikes (lots of people bike between Puerto Viejo center and destinations to the east) but I’m not sure if your family likes biking.

Since you mentioned your 11-year-old likes to snorkel, don’t miss the Punta Uva area, east of Puerto Viejo. It has some reefs you can snorkel around. If you do decide to stay at a destination outside of Puerto Viejo, you’d probably be best to park yourself in the Punta Uva area in order to be close to the snorkel site. If you ultimately decide to stay in Puerto Viejo center, you can bike, take a taxi, or take a tuk-tuk out to Punta Uva from Puerto Viejo, just like you’ll do when you visit the refuge in Manzanillo and the national park in Cahuita.
