KeymasterHello DIY2022!
Great question! It’s tough to know what you’ll end up paying when you pick up the car without knowing the details of your rental agreement and the details of your CDW insurance purchase. Most Costa Rica car rental agencies will accept foreign insurance so you don’t have to pay part of the insurance costs that are typically purchased in Costa Rica, but in order for that to happen, they require travelers to provide very specific documents (with very specific wording) from the foreign insurance provider, usually in the form of a custom letter. To best avoid surprises the day you pick up your rental car, I’d reach out to the Costa Rican agency you rented the car through and show them the coverage you’ve already purchased through Allianze. They should be able to confirm what they need to receive from you in terms of paperwork from Allianze and whether additional fees will apply when you pick up the car. If it turns out that extra fees will apply, if you know this in advance, perhaps you can get a refund on the coverage you purchased through Allianze so you’re not out that cost. 🙂
