KeymasterHey toothpaste!
Hmmm… good question! Of the three destinations you note, Rincon de la Vieja is closest to the coast (the northern Pacific coast), so if you’re going to make a day trip to the coast from somewhere, that would be the place from which to do it to reduce your drive time. That said, depending on where you stay around Rincon de la Vieja, and where you go along the coast, the drive required to make the day trip will likely be lengthy. I think you’ll find that if surfing is a must-have for your family, it makes more sense to visit the coast as its own destination, not as part of a day trip made to/from a different area. For beginner surf lessons, I’d head to Tamarindo. There are tons of experienced surf schools in town and lots of surf break options for surfers of varied skill levels, plus the destination is very family-friendly. Tamarindo is about a 2-2.5 drive from Rincon de la Vieja.

ParticipantThank you so much! Is this itinerary realistic or should we cut something out? We Are just now putting plans together for the schedule so we are totally flexible, just unsure of what to do as first timers. Manuel Antonio Park seems like a top destination as well. We are flying into San Jose and doing a 9 day itinerary with two of those days being travel days.

KeymasterHi toothpaste!
To clarify, which itinerary? La Fortuna/Arenal, Monteverde, and Rincon de la Vieja? If so, yes, it’s possible to fit all three of those destinations into a 9-day vacation. 🙂 If you decide to add Manuel Antonio to the trip, that will technically be possible, but your vacation will be incredibly tight. I’d recommend taking out one of the other destinations, such as Rincon de la Vieja, to make room for Manuel Antonio, if that destination is in your top three places to visit.
